Kwibohora 32

On Saturday, 4 July 2026, more than 300 Rwandans and Friends of Rwanda from Hannover, Lower Saxony, and across Germany gathered in Hannover to celebrate the 32nd Anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation (Kwibohora32).

The day began with sports activities at Leibniz University Hannover, bringing together six football teams alongside cultural performances, recreational activities, and an exhibition showcasing businesses led by members of the Rwandan community.

The official ceremony at the Wyndham Hannover Atrium featured remarks from representatives of the Rwandan community in Germany, who encouraged the diaspora to continue contributing to Rwanda’s development while serving as exemplary members of their communities in Germany.

In his keynote address, Ambassador Igor Cesar reflected on the significance of Kwibohora and Rwanda’s remarkable transformation over the past 32 years. Drawing from his own experience of growing up as a refugee, he emphasized that Liberation marked not only the end of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi but also the beginning of rebuilding a nation founded on unity, dignity, and equal opportunity for every Rwandan. He noted that "reconciliation was not merely a matter of words; it was a deliberate choice we made as a nation," and called on the youth to continue building Rwanda's future with vision, dedication, and patriotism.

The celebrations also included the presentation of football tournament awards, cultural performances, and a panel discussion titled "Thirty-Two Years After Liberation: Reflections and Perspectives of Rwandans Living in Germany," where speakers highlighted the role of the diaspora, the importance of preserving Rwanda's history, and engaging younger generations.

As Rwanda marks 32 years of Liberation, the celebration paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice that made the country's transformation possible while reaffirming the shared responsibility of Rwandans and Friends of Rwanda to continue building a united, prosperous, and forward-looking nation.

Kwibohora is not only a celebration of Rwanda's past achievements, it is a renewed commitment to shaping its future.
